The Iris & You

This day marks one year of the death of someone so very treasured and beloved to me since I was very, very young.  This poem is one I wrote to him over 33 years ago:

The Iris & You

The purple hues
pink & brown blendings
Never a clue
of wilting or bending
It’s amazing the way the iris grows around here
with color so rich & tolerant
to any atmosphere
So rich & strong
till picked from its plot
I took it home for decor
it only went to rot
Petals slumped towards the center
sickly slime & grey
So contrastingly deformed
in much less than a day
As perhaps your open arms would
it seemed to suck back in itself
for lack of its own grounds
for fear of placement on a shelf
The beauty of the iris that grows around here
must connect its own roots
to survive the atmosphere

The understanding of blues
your arms are so lending
Your time’s never through
when there’s a hurt that needs mending
It’s amazing the way your love grows around here
a bond quite loose yet consistent
through many a tear
So consistent & strengthening
until you’re pulled from your spot
With independence toyed & threatened
touch grows rigid & taught
Without respect for one’s uniqueness
what is shared will soon decay
You learn to protect yourself
in a very hard way
Like the fall of gloried blossom
your strong hold would fall from me
There’s one thing you need cling to
it’s your own identity
Yes the warmth of the love that you spread around here
must survive its own roots
to overcome a bitter tear

I’ve learned now something precious
in my heart here, hard & true
To lack the greed leaves many wonders
in the iris & you

Thank you so much Sue, your words as always reach me in a very timely manner! I found this poem during a very emotional treasure hunt through a box of olden journals a few years ago while in his house, when he was still here…I read it out loud to him and it brought us both to tears…so it has some special timeless mojo for me!
